SUMMARY:NOLA Jazz Band in the RME Courtyard (FREE!)
DESCRIPTION:Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society\, and River Music Experience present a FREE performance from NOLA Jazz Band in the RME Courtyard!\n\n\nFrom their debut in The Basement of The Des Moines Social Club in March 2015\, the NOLA Jazz Band has been in demand across the greater Midwest. They have also played numerous festivals across Iowa and the Midwest\, and are highly sought after for larger private events in the Des Moines area. The band also continues to build their reputation regionally and across the U.S.  \nBand members have shared the stage with jazz greats and have been inducted into the Iowa Jazz and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.  They have also played at well-known Jazz clubs such as Spotted Cat in New Orleans and the Iridium and Smalls in New York City. Recent musical groups and artists the band has played with include: \n   Davina & the Vagabonds (Minneapolis) \n    Bria Skonberg – rising star jazz trumpet player and singer (New York City) \n   Marla Dixon and The Shotgun Jazz Band (New Orleans) \n   Dom Flemons – bluegrass/roots/Americana artist\, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops \nAll band members have a common love for the “feel” of both traditional and current New Orleans based music – real\, gutsy\, raw\, heartfelt\, and entertaining.  The band truly enjoys playing this fun music together and sees their audiences as part of their “family living room experience” for each performance. \nThe NOLA Jazz Band loves to expose audiences to this traditional jazz music\, its history\, and emotion. One of the best compliments we’ve received from a number of audience members is “I don’t find myself liking jazz – however I LOVE whatever it is that you play!” Yes we’ve actually heard that same quote many times and it warms our hearts to know people truly enjoy our playing. Just as traditional jazz was built on collaboration and diversity so is our band. The eight members of the band are represented by five generations ranging from their early 20s to mid-60s – each with their own unique experiences and musical talents. \nThe Band released their first album in March\, 2016 – NOLA Jazz Band Vol. 1 “Genesis – Live from the ARK”. Her new album\, “Legions & Legends” is a collection of 10 stories that pay homage to the Midwestern way of life. Often cyclical\, this journey is paved by ancestral footsteps and lit by neon signs. Along the way\, we trip over the roots of our family trees\, finding routine in bad habits\,  falling in love and setting the tone for future generations. At times\, we resent the places we come from\, but we never leave- they built us a legacy. \nAngela pulls in the crowd with a sweet voice and brutal honesty.  She knows what it’s like to be in the audience\, her earliest memories taking her back to being a child dancing around a smoky beer tent at the Iowa State Fair while her mama sang on stage.  Even before she could talk\, Angela was singing along with the radio and introduced to her musical heroes through her grandparents’ record player in their Iowa farmhouse. At 10 years old\, they gave her a guitar for Christmas\, but it was so large she had to lay it across her lap to learn how to play it.  She finally revisited the guitar at fifteen\, starting to write her own songs and creating the foundation that has built her dream into a lifelong career. DESCRIPTION:Chicken Wire Empire\, Miles Over Mountains\, and Bethann Heidgerken in the Redstone Room on May 13th!\n\n\nBorn from the Wisconsin jamband scene\, Chicken Wire Empire began as a traditional bluegrass band. The band honed its traditional sound in 2014 with their debut album Chicken Wire Empire. With half of the group rooted in bluegrass\, and the other half steeped in jamband music\, a change occurred when CWE performed an Old & In The Way tribute show. A new sound was found in Milwaukee\, and Chicken Wire Empire joined the roster of high energy jamgrass happening across the nation.  This journey from traditional to progressive was documented by director Ross Monagle in the film ”All It Takes\,” premiering in 2016 at the Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee. Recorded and mixed by sound engineer Sam Donoghue\, the film follows the band around Wisconsin and includes performances in Milwaukee’s historic Riverside Theatre.  In 2018\, the band returned to the studio\, recording their sophomore album “What Moves Mountains” at Axis Recording Studios with engineer Vinny Millevolte and the mastering talents of Justin Perkins. With support from their family and friends\, What Moves Mountains was released January 1st of 2019. \n“The new Chicken Wire Empire record is a technically proficient\, well-crafted mixture of modern original songwriting and time earned classics. They seem to have taken on some wonderfully exciting elements of modern progressive bluegrass while also retaining their original character\, born of their greater Milwaukee town roots.” – Adam Greuel of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades \nIn November of 2019\, Chicken Wire Empire toured Germany\, Austria\, and Switzerland as part of the 9th annual Bluegrass Jamboree\, hosted by Rainier Zellner. While the band fell in love with Christmas markets\, the European audiences were enamored with the CWE sound. Arriving back in America\, the band sifted through recordings of all 24 shows.  With the help of their engineer Daniel Machnik\, the tour was encapsulated in two live 2021 releases\, ”Live from Deutschland Vol. 1 & 2.” \n“The new Chicken Wire Empire live recordings rock! What a great show they put on! The flow of the recordings makes one feel like you are sitting in the audience in the auditorium for the live performance. I especially enjoyed their unique take on some of the traditional songs found in the bluegrass repertoire – made them truly sound like their own. The somewhat non-traditional grass tracks are what might be considered “progressive traditional” bluegrass\, where they stretch out a bit while keeping the traditional feel. I thoroughly enjoyed these “funkytrad” recordings by Chicken Wire Empire!” – Greg Cahill (Special Consensus) \nIn 2020\, as live shows were drying up\, the band turned to live-streaming\, and were featured showcase artists in virtual renditions of the IBMA and Folk Alliance International conferences. The album features guests Peter Rowan\, Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Andy Hall\, Tim O’Brien\, and Nick Forester. DESCRIPTION:The Ghost of Paul Revere return to the Redstone Room May 8th with Early James and Logan Springer & The Wonderfully Wild!\n\n\n \nLife constantly changes. It seesaws between hardship and triumph\, loss and satisfaction\, and heartbreak and love. No matter how much everything fluctuates\, community flourishes at the center of existence. It binds and unites all of us. Music stitches together a strong community around The Ghost of Paul Revere. The Maine trio—Max Davis \, Sean McCarthy \, and Griffin Sherry —examine life’s ebbs and flows through a distinct and dynamic distillation of folk\, bluegrass\, rock\, and alternative on their third full-length album\, Good At Losing Everything. \nIn doing so\, the band invites listeners to empathize as they holler along. \n“Over the past few years\, we’ve collectively endured many significant changes\,” says Griffin. “When you’re writing music\, it naturally morphs into what you’re doing. We were going through the same things without necessarily acknowledging it out loud\, but the music writes itself along with life.” \n“We always just wanted to be strong community members who create an excuse for people to come together\, process\, and share emotions\,” agrees Max. “Those individuals who have supported us are growing all of the time. Our audience has given us a degree of freedom to grow. It’s liberating\, because we’ve been able to take risks and evolve each time we go into the studio.” \nSince forming in 2011\, the band has created a following that has propelled them from a local to a national level\, tallying 15 million total independent streams to date. After releasing the EP North in 2012\, their signature style gradually progressed over the course of two full-length albums—Believe  and Monarch —and a pair of EPs—Field Notes\, Vol. 1  and Field Notes\, Vol. 2 . They also garnered acclaim from the likes of Billboard\, Boston Globe\, AXS\, No Depression\, Relix\, and The Boot\, who appropriately dubbed them\, “not quite bluegrass\, not quite country\, not quite rock ‘n’ roll\, but kind of all three combined.” Along the way\, the band has performed alongside The Avett Brothers\, Jason Isbell\, The Revivalists\, Bela Fleck\, and The Infamous Stringdusters\, sold out countless headlining gigs\, and appeared at major festivals nationwide such as Newport Folk\, Austin City Limits\, WinterWonderGrass\, BottleRock Napa\, Shaky Knees\, Okeechobee\, and Voodoo Music + Arts Experience. The boys also took home “Best in Maine” at the New England Music Awards twice\, in 2015 and 2019. In 2019\, their song\, “Ballad Of The 20th Maine”\, became the official State Ballad of Maine after being passed unanimously by the Senate and House of Representatives and signed into law by Maine’s Governor\, Janet Mills. \nIn 2014\, they also began curating\, booking\, and hosting their very own festival\, Ghostland. Rooted in a love for Maine’s music community\, the festival has grown into one of the state’s largest festivals\, drawing both local and national talent to the annual Labor Day Weekend event. \nThroughout 2019\, they worked on what would become Good At Losing Everything. While it would be their third record with engineer and producer Jonathan Wyman\, it would be their first collaboration with friend\, producer\, and co-writer Spencer Albee. They also welcomed new members\, drummer Chuck Gagne and instrumentalist Jackson Kincheloe\, as well as pianist Ben Cosgrove\, into the fold to record. \nThey demoed initial ideas at Albee’s home studio before moving into a local venue for a month. There\, the band continuously played the new songs together on stage until each felt finished. By the time they entered the studio\, they were firing on all cylinders. \n“It was the first time we worked with a producer as we were writing a record\,” Sean states. “Since Spencer comes from a different background\, he stretched our abilities to places we might’ve been uncomfortable to go to on our own. He gave us a much-needed outside perspective.” \n“He’s an amazing songwriter with an incredible pop sensibility\,” adds Max. “He was really helpful with fortifying the structure\, so the music flows.” \nThematically\, the songs directly addressed a myriad of emotions. Among many trials and tribulations\, the passing of a close mutual friend weighed heavy on the musicians as they crafted Good At Losing Everything. \n“A big part of this album is dealing with personal loss and moving forward\,” admits Sean. “We lost our good buddy\, Taylor\, to cancer. Simultaneously\, we were dealing with professional stresses and each going through our own difficulties.” \nThe first single\, “Love At Your Convenience”\, illuminates the group’s progression. Fueled by shimmering piano\, sweeping guitar\, and uplifting harmonies\, it takes off on a soaring and soulful chant—“My love ain’t here for your convenience\, if the grass is greener\, then be done with us”—punctuated by unrestrained rock ambition. \nMeanwhile\, the opener and title track “Good At Losing Everything” slips from strains of gospel choir and handclaps into rustling guitar\, a steady beat\, and hummable harmonica. A heartfelt dedication to Taylor\, they dispense some hard-earned knowledge: “If there’s one thing I’ve learned about life\, my friend\, you get good at losing everything.” \n“As Taylor was fighting his battle\, I was having very vivid dreams about his passing\,” Griffin confesses. “I wrote about what it would be like to go to a friend’s funeral and how I needed to start coping with the feeling before I was in the situation.” \nOriginally composed on an old Casio keyboard\, “Two-Hundred and Twenty-Six Days” hinges on warm reverb and an airy buzz as it blossoms into an “upbeat rhythm with somber lyrics\,” according to Max. Then\, there’s “Loneliness.” Stark vocals paint a vivid picture of “coping with depression when you’re living on your own\,” as Griffin puts it. \nExpanding the sonic palette\, The Ghost of Paul Revere infuse string sections\, looping\, and mellotron into immersive interludes such as “28:27” and the outro “We Were Born Wild.” \n“I started to experiment with looping and reversing tracks while on the road\,” remarks Griffin. “I found elements already in our songs that melted together and created a landscape. We had never tried anything like that on a record before.” \n“We began with just acoustic instruments and made this style we called\, ‘Holler Folk’\,” Sean adds. “Now\, we’re taking chances and doing things we wouldn’t have done six years ago. We’re hungry to create new things and challenge what we can do together.” \nIn the end\, The Ghost of Paul Revere open up both thematically and musically on Good At Losing Everything. And yet\, the music begs an unapologetically Pollyanna question\, like a big-hearted dare: Can a song help save you?  \n“I think when we strive to be the best versions of ourselves\, and to accept other people that we don’t understand\, that all works toward creating a culture we strive for\,” says Collin Krause\, one of The Way Down Wanderers’ two lead songwriters and vocalists. “Part of that process really is working on yourself––and self-forgiveness. At the end of the day\, we’re not going to be perfect. The idea is to recognize that\, and to try to forgive yourself if you can––and to try to move on and make progress.”   \n“Right\,” adds Austin Krause-Thompson\, the band’s other frontman and core writer. “And this record does lend itself to some of those messages.”  \nAustin and Collin are discussing More Like Tomorrow\, the Way Down Wanderers’ third full-length release. The project is the anticipated follow-up to their 2019 breakthrough album Illusions\, which earned praise from Rolling Stone Country\, No Depression\, Relix\, and more. The band’s gorgeous harmonies and string-band virtuosity still anchor the new album\, but the sonic borders the Way Down Wanderers once flirted with crossing have been beautifully breached. Their lyricism has also evolved\, giving way to true stories that cut deep. “I think more so on this record than ever\, the songs are just more direct\, with acute meanings in our own situations\,” says Austin. “Each’s song’s story is less broad. I think\, at least for me\, writing is definitely growing more and more personal.”   \nWith More Like Tomorrow\, the five-piece band from Peoria\, Illinois\, has emerged not just as quirky bluegrass kids with a habit of experimentation\, but as confident purveyors of some of the most sophisticated roots-pop anywhere.  \n“I love it when the song itself dictates the sonic arrangement––the pop sensibilities or Americana we can throw in there\,” Collin says. “I think just allowing the song to exist as its own entity is really important.”  \nEvery song on More Like Tomorrow stands alone but works with the group to achieve something bigger––much like the Way Down Wanderers themselves. Collin and Austin met as teenagers––at 15 and 19\, respectively. Multi-instrumentalist Austin was drumming in a rock band at the time\, while Collin was playing mandolin and fiddle in a bluegrass-leaning folk outfit. The two felt like brothers fast. A few years later\, Austin married Collin’s older sister\, making the two men who met and connected as boys actual family.   \nTo form the Way Down Wanderers\, Collin and Austin welcomed jazz percussionist John Merikoski\, classical upright bassist John Williams\, and banjo player Travis Kowalsky. The quintet’s years on the road have built a devoted grassroots following\, which the band cherishes. Collin points to the connection with audiences as a key cultivator of their latest songwriting. “Having a group that listens and absorbs your music who you can identify with as a community rather than just fans opens us up as writers to feel more comfortable about openly discussing personal things that we’ve been through in a song\,” he says.  \nAlbum opener “Codeine\, Rest\, & Loneliness” is a stunning example of what the Way Down Wanderers can do with that comfort. Co-written by Collin and Austin\, the song is a breathtaking vocal and instrumental showcase\, filled with soaring harmonies\, intimate solos\, and dizzying strings. Part mournful cry\, part joyful tribute\, “Codeine\, Rest\, & Loneliness” was inspired by the loss of two friends who died young. Both of the writers count the song as their favorite on the record.   \nWith piano-pounding\, jam-band swagger and a message of interconnectivity and hope\, “The Wire” is a singalong just waiting to be shouted back to the stage. Leaning into a scratchy pop-train beat\, “Hard Times” points to the rejuvenation made possible in the trenches of tough stuff. With poignant guitar tone that rings out like a bell and tender lead vocals\, “Dark Marks” rests easily and gratefully in the comfort of home and love.  \nStark bass kicks off “Forever\,” a moving meditation on the changes demanded after becoming a parent. “My wife and I recently had a son\, and it’s been absolutely amazing\, but it’s definitely brought about some of the more stressful situations we’ve been through\,” Austin says. “Having kids just shows you parts of yourself that you need to fix. It really shows you what you need to do to be the best person you can be––more so than anything else I’ve found.” Bouncing “Two Parts One Heart” captures fatherhood’s wonder and joy in line after witty line.   \nA feat of melodic funk\, “Hiding” is a warm embrace of self\, from expression to acceptance. Full of claps and stomps\, jaunty album closer “Everything’s Made of Sand” peddles kindness for kindness’ sake rather than to please a higher power\, and luxuriating in transience instead of fearing it.  \nHighlights “Parkside Drive” and “Love is My Gospel” carry the record’s overarching messages of self-accountability and love in different ways. Heart-heavy but determined\, “Parkside Drive” relies on vulnerable vocals that swell into a chorus of powerful repetition. Collin wrote the song\, a complex dual narrative inspired by true stories. As he documents his own recovery from alcohol dependency\, Collin also memorializes a neighbor who sometimes wanted a little more time than Collin wanted to give. Suffering in silence\, the neighbor ultimately took his own life. Collin pays tribute\, searches for strength\, absolves himself\, and commits to a better standard in less than three mesmerizing minutes. “I guess I felt a personal responsibility to write the song\, and it was a hard song to write. It’s a really emotional song to perform\,” he says. “I think it’s some of the most vulnerable lyrics I’ve ever written. I also think it’s crucial to my recovery process. It’s affected the way I treat people or even think of strangers.”  \nWarm and full\, “Love is My Gospel” balances gratitude for love and partnership with the knowledge that everyone doesn’t have it. Praise for love as a guide rolls into musings on inequality and privilege. “I have this idea as a writer that a song doesn’t have to follow one specific message\,” Collin says. “I was just realizing how fortunate I am in my life to have a partner I love so much\, but then\, I was thinking simultaneously about how there is a lot of sorrow in the world. Just being a white person in America––my privilege could be the cause of someone else’s deprivation. That’s something I try to be aware of.” The messages emerge as two sides of the same coin: By trusting love\, we are open to empathy––which means we must hold space for sorrow and other’s experiences. The song is masterpiece of writing and performance.  \nWorking in that sweet spot where self-acceptance and rejection of the status-quo collide\, the Way Down Wanderers hope listeners can find their own personal applications and understandings of the new songs. “Connection\, release\, relatability––maybe hope\, or confidence\, or reassurance\,” Austin says. “I hope that people kind of weave these messages into their lives in their own positive way.”  \n \nAll tickets are general admission. Local songwriters are paired up with top notch QC musicians to act as their own personal backing band\, complete with all the fun and community that the Quad Cities as come to know as an All Sweat Productions show. \nThis month’s songwriters are: \nSoultru \nSoultru is a soul acoustic artist based in Davenport\, Iowa\, a part of the Quad Cities\, Iowa/Illinois. He has signed to Kansas City label The Record Machine. They sometimes travel with a full band and as a duo or solo (Terrance Banks). \nDrawing influence from gospel music artists like Fred Hammond and Smokie Norful. While later finding artists such as Gavin Degraw\, Anthony Hamilton\, John Legend\, and\, most recently\, Allen Stone. \nThey have had the pleasure of opening for artists such as  Kweku Collins\, Magic City Hippies\, Michigan Rattlers\, Neil Hilborn\, Ceschi Ramos\, Kaleb Mitchell\, and shared The Alder Theatre stage with Amythyst Kiah in June 2021. \nSoultru ended 2021 strong playing essential festivals such as Alternating Currents in the Quad Cities\, added to the Barrel and Flow Fest in Pittsburgh\, PA\, and Lincoln Calling in Lincoln\, NE.  \n—- \nFrankie Fontagne \nBorn in the small mid-west town of Monmouth\, IL\, Frankie Fontagne began her career early\, as most soul singer/performers did\, singing in the church choir. It was here that her natural ability was given the roots that would later flower into its current soulful state. Not only did Ms. Fontagne sing in the church choir\, but she became a student of music. From 1982-1993\, Ms Fontagne became a student of the Monmouth\, Warren County music program\, headed by Dr. Edward Sheckler. It was there that she flourished as an awarding winning percussionist. Those years were the beginning of Ms. Fontagne’s proving ground.  \nRealizing that her hometown didn’t provide the opportunities she needed\, Frankie packed up and headed west to California where she began to ride the “circuit” dabbling in gospel and doing hooks for various west coast rap groups throughout the 90’s. Though not very lucrative\, these escapades paid off in the form of studio experience as well as chances to arrange and produce.  \n—- \nZay \nBorn in Glendale\, California\, but makes his home in Davenport\, Iowa; Zay has always had a passion for music. At the young age of 14\, Zay started producing 6 track beats for fun\, and would occasionally write short stories and poems. Little did he know this would build a strong foundation for his music career in the years to come. He’s amassed over 15 years as a professional hip-hop dancer/choreographer\, was a featured dancer on B.E.T’s 106th & Park -Wild Out Wednesday\, and has done shows with Chris Brown\, Soulja Boy & T-Pain.. Zay is not only at the forefront of entertainment as an up & coming Artist & DJ\, but also has an AA and BS in Electronic Engineering. DESCRIPTION:Two-time Grammy Award winning Terrance Simien at the River Music Experience on April 16th!\n\n\nFor 40 years\, two- time GRAMMY award winning artist Terrance Simien and 8th generation Louisiana Creole\, has been shattering the myths about what his indigenous Zydeco roots music is – and is not. Leading his Zydeco Experience bandmates – long time members Danny Williams\, keyboards and Stan Chambers\, bass with Lance Ellis\, sax; Ian Molinaro – Thompson\, drums\, and our newest member\, Revon Andrews on trombone. \nSimien has become one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American roots music today. He and his band mates have performed over 9000 concerts\, toured millions of miles to over 45 countries during their eventful career. \nIn 2021 Simien led the effort to have Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights” become the first Louisiana state song ever written by an African American artist/composer. A very big deal! Simien was also the recipient of the prestigious Foundation for Louisiana Worldmakers unrestricted grant with priority to BIPOC artists. He was one of 30 awarded out of 360 applications\, and the only from his part of the state and genre.  Finally\, the zydeco exhibit we helped curate\, went live on MLK Day this year at the $60 million National Museum of African American Music in Nashville\, TN – ironically\, right across the street from The Ryman where few African Americans have performed. \n2020 is not the most remarkable year in our lives and careers\, but finishing a studio album was no small feat during a pandemic – so\, we’ll take it! \n2019 marked Simien’s 34th consecutive New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival – the gold standard for diversity in American roots music. \n2014 proved to be another memorable year when Simien & his collaborators from the Zydeco Experience band were honored with their second GRAMMY award in Los Angeles on January 26\, 2014 at the Nokia Theatre. \n2012 found Simien & his band mates seen performing their original song “Dance Everyday” in the Warner Brothers film “The Lucky One” starring Zac Efron and Blythe Danner\, and directed by Oscar nominated director Scott Hicks. Simien’s version of zydeco standard “Uncle Bud” was also used in the film. \n2009 signaled the release of Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog”\, set in the city of New Orleans and featured their first black princess. Alas\, history was made with that one move! Simien is the featured guest artist on “Gonna Take You There”\, a zydeco flavored song penned by Randy Newman. Simien recorded the song with Newman in Los Angeles in late 2007 and it has became a favorite track for children everywhere! Simien’s student audiences all over the country sing along with him when he & his band mates perform it during their school time concerts. History was also made again\, in a very big way for this genre –  as it was the first time Disney featured zydeco music in a film! As if that was not enough – the word zydeco was also spoken in the movie by one of the characters and has introduced generations of young children and families to this black American roots music. And because of this film\, millions have heard zydeco for the very first time! We are forever grateful to John Lasseter and the team at Disney for this rare opportunity to have zydeco immortalized in a Disney film. \nIn 2005 Simien led HBO producers deep into Creole country for another high visible opportunity for the genre and he introduced them to the prodigious 5 year old zydeco talent\, Guyland Leday. This gifted young musician was featured in the HBO doc “The Music in Me: Children’s Recitals from Classical to Latin\, Jazz to Zydeco. This was a huge victory for his state\, genre and Creole culture. It was also this year that they became the first zydeco artists to perform in Cuba for the U.S\, State Department. In 2006\, Carnegie Hall presented them in Mali\, West Africa as part of their unique Global Encounters program. There have been multiple U.S. State Department tours to North Africa\, Ukraine\, Russia\, Dominican Republic\, Paraguay – all as part of the U.S Cultural Diplomacy efforts around the globe that began in 1955. \nHowever\, it was 2008 that proved to be one of the most memorable years of their eventful career when they were honored with their first GRAMMY™ award and the first in zydeco since Rockin Sidney Simien received his in 1985. They also performed that day at The 50th GRAMMY™ Awards pre-Tel ceremony. This was also the culmination of 7 years of hard work to establish a new Grammy category for best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album that Simien and his wife/business partner\, Cynthia led to success. They effectively changed the vocabulary of the Recording Academy and the trajectory of the history for both genres. Because of their efforts that began in 2001\, to connect their region with the GRAMMY awards after decades with little or no recognition in the awards\, since 2008 over 100 Cajun & zydeco artists have garnered Grammy noms and awards. Their hard work embodies an inclusive leadership style and artist advocacy for the greater good of their broader music community\, city (Lafayette & Opelousas) and state of Louisiana. This is also now an important part of Southern roots music history\, African American music history and the Americana Music Triangle. \nSimien was born in 1965 (appropriately) into the hippie folk and soul music era that still intrigues him today. He grew artistically being influenced and inspired by all of the music from that period. He was as influenced by Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel as he was by Sam Cooke and the Commodores. Since his family is documented in history books as one of the first Creole families to settle St. Landry Parish\, his musical roots are firmly planted alongside the great zydeco pioneers like Chenier\, Delafose\, Chavis\, Ardoin and that other Simien\, Rockin Sidney\, to name a few. He counts himself one of the fortunate few who hail from a generation with a direct link to these artists\, some of whom mentored him as an emerging talent. He has assumed that same role to a new generation of young Zydeco hotshots because he understands how critical mentoring is to the success of his indigenous music that has become synonymous with the cultural identity of Louisiana and an important part of the musical landscape of this country. \nIn 1983 at the young age of 18\, Simien began touring professionally and by 20 he was sharing the stage with Fats Domino and Sarah Vaughn at the Bern Jazz Festival. His career exploded after that and Terrance remains a pivotal part of Zydeco music history. In the early 1980’s there were only 2 emerging bands touring nationally; the young Terrance and The Sam Brothers were the only artists reaching a younger audience with their indigenous roots music. Simien was also vital to the “renaissance” of a genre that was becoming extinct with the passing of each pioneer starting with Clifton Chenier in 1987. By the end of the 1990’s\, all of the other influential pioneers had departed. This placed Terrance at the forefront of an exciting period of growth and popularity for this black roots music born in the rural\, French speaking Creole communities of South Louisiana. Some might call him the OG of zydeco! We’re def down with that. \nSimien is blessed with an extraordinary talent and charisma that expresses our deepest human emotions through the original instrument: The Voice. He takes his audiences on a multicultural tour of the world as the many countries he’s visited while on tour have informed his musical language. He creates a hypnotic blend of New Orleans funk-reggae-flavored-world-blues-American zydeco roots music that beckons you to your feet and into the groove. He has found an authentic and artful way to deliver his roots music as a relevant\, evolving artist who is clearly rooted in Creole music traditions. Well known for his legendary live performances\, Simien also helped change the vocabulary for his genre by introducing complex vocal harmonies\, diverse repertoire and carefully crafted high quality recordings. \nTerrance and his loyal and skilled band mates\, the Zydeco Experience\, have shared studio & stage with Robert Palmer\, Stevie Wonder\, Los Lobos\, Taj Mahal\, Dr. John\, the Meters\, Alan Toussaint\, Paul Simon and Dave Matthews Band to name a few. Their music has been featured in TV commercials and a dozen or more films\, including the blockbuster “The Big Easy” which changed the game for Louisiana music in the late 80’s. Their music has been heard on NPR syndicated radio shows like World Café\, American Routes\, E-town & House of Blues Radio Hour. Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, and other notable music industry publications\, as well as major daily newspapers have praised his recordings. His extensive discography dates back to vinyl 45’s. In 1991 he was signed to rock label Restless Records by A&R rep Ron Goudie who brought the band Poison to the same label group. \nSimien’s groundbreaking Creole for Kidz & The History of Zydeco for student\, youth and family audiences has reached nearly 500\,000 since its debut in 2000. The album hit #10 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart\, #24 for 2020 on the Roots Music Report Top Contemporary Blues Album Chart\, “Rise Up” was named top song of 2020 in the Ben Vee Roadhouse 66 top songs of 2020\, “Come and Get This Love” won top honors in the Unsigned Only Songwriting Competition and in the International Songwriting Competition\, Avey Grouws band was nominated for the 2020 BBMAs for Debut Album New Artist and was nominated for 4 awards in the 2021 Independent Blues Awards\, including Best New Artist\, Best New Artist Album.  \nHot on the heels of their Billboard charting album\, ‘The Devil May Care’\, AGB is released their sophomore album ‘Tell Tale Heart’ September 24\, 2021. Recorded in Nashville at East Iris Studios and The Purple House (Leiper’s Fork\, TN) with Grammy-winning engineer/producer Casey Wasner at the helm. Featuring 10 original songs\, ‘Tell Tale Heart’’s music (described by Wasner as “rock and roll blues soul”) demonstrates the label-defying band’s command of a wide swath of American roots music – – including blues\, classic rock\, country\, R&B\, funk\, introspective balladry and unbridled rock and roll. \n \nLauren Anderson\, a soulful rocker originally from Chicago\, has had a passion for singing throughout her entire life. Growing up in a household that was rich in music\, her influences were widely varied from artists such as Susan Tedeschi\, Bonnie Raitt\, The Pointer Sisters\, Eva Cassidy\, Etta James\, Joss Stone\, Jason Mraz\, Black Eyed Peas\, Christina Aguilera\, and many more.   \nDespite these modern musical influences\, Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8\, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She eventually took her love of singing to the Quad Cities and obtained a bachelors degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. Initially she planned on becoming an opera singer\, but quickly realized that rock and soul music were more her style. \nHaving listened to those around her\, telling her that music and the arts were difficult fields to have a career in\, Lauren followed the safe path in life\, making sure she had a “back-up” plan while working on her music and performing. This lead her to The University of Kansas to complete her masters degree in music therapy. She worked for several years as a music therapist on a pediatric unit and at a school for at-risk youth in Kansas City. However\, even with a steady job she found that passions don’t die easily\, and despite her love of working as a music therapist\, she was ready to take on the challenge of making music performance her career. \nAfter officially completing her masters in 2012\, Lauren began performing solo gigs around the greater Kansas City area and eventually put together a full band. She released her first official EP\, “Do & Hope”\, in August 2014.  Fittingly\, this EP was named after the unofficial motto of Lauren’s mother’s side of the family\, who often remarked\, “Just do it and hope it turns out okay.” \nLauren released her first\, full-length CD titled\, “Truly Me” in August 2015. And two singles\, recorded in the legendary Ocean Way Nashville Studios\, in 2016. Takin’ Requests tour at the River Music Experience on March 21st!\n\n\nYou don’t often hear about an artist reinventing their sound twenty albums into a celebrated career. But for Todd Snider\, his latest release\, First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder (2021)\, isn’t so much a sudden change in direction as an arrival after years of searching. \nSince debuting in 1994\, Snider has gone through his own incarnations. His first single “Talking Seattle Blues” was a head fake that might’ve pointed to goofy novelty songs. \nBut he quickly showed that his artistic quiver was much deeper and more interesting. A storyteller who works a similar creative soil to John Prine and Shel Silverstein\, Snider’s best songs are both sad and funny\, political and entertaining\, and always written with a poet’s eye and a stand-up comedian’s sensibility about the follies of human condition. \nWhile he’s made twenty fine albums\, it’s on stage where Snider is even more potent\, with between-song banter that weaves subtle emotional threads through his sets. A road dog who loves the road\, Snider has toured with Emmylou Harris\, John Prine\, Jimmy Buffett\, and appeared at festivals like Farm Aid\, Newport Folk Fest\, Lockn’ and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. \nSnider was born in Portland\, Oregon\, and lived there until his family moved to Houston\, Texas. When he was 15\, he ran away from home with a friend and went back to Portland. After high school\, he moved to Santa Rosa\, California\, to be a harmonica player. Then his brother\, who lived in Austin\, Texas\, bought him a ticket to come live there. After seeing Jerry Jeff Walker in a local bar\, Snider decided that he didn’t need a band to be a musician. \nAfter moving to Memphis\, Tennessee\, in the mid-1980s and establishing residency at a club named the Daily Planet\, he was discovered by Keith Sykes\, a member of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. A longtime acquaintance of John Prine and Walker\, Sykes began to work with Snider to help advance his career. Prine hired him as an assistant and then invited him to open shows. In time\, Buffett heard Snider’s demo tapes and signed him to his own label. On his music\, Snider has said “I was just trying to come up with the best … most open hearted … well-thought-out lyrics I could come up with. I wanted every song to be sad and funny at the same time\, vulnerable and entertaining at the same time\, personal and universal at the same time. I wanted every song to be as uniquely written as possible and then I wanted to perform them in a studio loose and rugged and hopefully as uniquely as I could. My hope is to be hard to describe and/or new … I’m not saying I am. I’m just saying that’s the hope.” \nSnider’s 1994 debut album on MCA\, entitled Songs for the Daily Planet\, was named for the bar where Snider used to play regularly in Memphis. On that album were the minor hits “Talkin’ Seattle Grunge Rock Blues”—a folk song about the early ’90s grunge scene\, featuring a band that “refused to play” —and “Alright Guy”\, which later became the title cut of Gary Allan’s 2001 album. \nHe released two more albums for MCA\, Step Right Up and Viva Satellite before moving to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records\, for which he made Happy to Be Here\, New Connection\, Near Truths and Hotel Rooms\, East Nashville Skyline\, and Peace Love and Anarchy. That Was Me: The Best of Todd Snider 1994–1998 was released by Hip-O Records in August 2005. \nSnider’s next studio album\, The Devil You Know\, was released in August 2006. It marked his return to a major label\, New Door Records\, a subsidiary of Universal Records. The Devil You Know was named to several critics’ year-end “best” lists\, including a number 33 ranking in Rolling Stone magazine’s top 50 albums of the year\, a number 25 ranking by No Depression magazine\, and number 14 by Blender magazine. \nSnider’s album Peace Queer was released on October 14\, 2008\, and reached number 1 on the Americana Airplay Chart on October 27\, 2008. His album The Excitement Plan\, produced by Don Was\, was released on June 9\, 2009\, on the YepRoc label. \nSnider contributed a cover version of “A Boy Named Sue” to the 2010 Sugar Hill Records album Twistable Turnable Man\, a tribute by various artists to the songwriter Shel Silverstein. \nSnider’s songs “Late Last Night” and “I Believe You” have been recorded by the Oklahoma red dirt band Cross Canadian Ragweed. He co-wrote the song “Barbie Doll” with the country star Jack Ingram. \nSnider worked with Adult Swim to perform the “Fatal Distraction” variant of the Squidbillies theme song and part of “Listen to the Animals”. He also guest-starred\, along with voice-over announcer Andrew Montesi and The Regular Guys radio DJ Larry Wachs\, in the series\, voicing a lobster. \nIn February 2011\, Snider released a double-disc live album\, The Storyteller\, on his own record label\, Aimless Records. The album features live versions of songs spanning much of Snider’s career along with some of the stories that have become a staple of his live show. \nIn April 2012\, Snider released two albums\, Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables and a tribute album\, Time As We Know It: The Songs of Jerry Jeff Walker. The latter album is an homage to country singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker. American Songwriter claims\, “Snider has been carrying on Walker’s scraggly Texas-styled country/Americana tradition since he started.” \nThe album Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables was listed at number 47 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 50 albums of 2012\, saying\, “One of the sharpest\, funniest storytellers in rock\, Snider keeps the indictments coming.” \nOn December 20\, 2013\, Snider debuted a new band called Hard Working Americans at a benefit concert at the Boulder Theater in Boulder\, Colorado\, for Colorado Flood Relief. The band’s first album is a collection of lesser-known cover songs\, to be released January 2014. Snider said in an interview that he chose some of the covers because they were melodic and “I wanted it to be very melodic. I’m hoping to learn about that in this process.” The group includes bassist Dave Schools (of Widespread Panic)\, guitarist Neal Casal\, keyboard player Chad Staehly and drummer Duane Trucks. The band also released a cover of “Come From the Heart” with Roseanne Cash\, made available on iTunes in September 2014.
